The pebble beds are a source of high quality sand and gravel reputed to be the largest reserves in Europe . There are three quarries with planning permission for mineral working within Cannock Chase AONB: Rugeley Quarry, Pottal Pool Quarry and Shoal Hill Quarry. All produce sand and gravel used for mortar, concrete and asphalt and it is also a fill material for engineering works.
