About our projects

Our AONB Management Plan 2025-2030 sets out how we will work together with residents, businesses and visitors to deliver our vision for Cannock Chase to be “a wild and beautiful place, distinctive, thriving, resilient and welcoming.”

Our programme of work to deliver the Plan is wide ranging, ambitious and challenging:

  • We will drive forward nature recovery and contribute to the Government’s target of protecting 30% of our land for nature by 2030 (30by30).
  • We have set a pathway to be net zero and will need to think creatively about how we deliver the challenging tree planting targets and changes to agricultural practices this will require.
  • We will be taking measures to reinforce the Chase’s distinctive sense of place and protect its landscape and rich heritage.
  • We will make people feel a part of Cannock Chase, including improving our welcome and the quality of the experience for visitors from all backgrounds and abilities.

Current Projects

30by30

The National Landscape Partnership has set a challenging target of protecting and managing for nature 35% of the National Landscape by 2030 – exceeding the Government’s 30by30 commitment.

Chase past, present and future

Our new Historic Environment Strategy ‘Chase past, present and future’ aims to ensure that the National Landscape’s rich and diverse heritage assets and broader cultural landscapes are protected for current and future generations.

Climate change

Climate change is a shared challenge, and we are working with our partners, land managers, residents and visitors to take action to improve the resilience of the National Landscape and reduce the impacts of hotter, drier summers, warmer wetter winters and extreme weather events.

Dark Skies

The Cannock Chase National Partnership is working to encourage more people to appreciate the wonder of our dark skies and play their part in minimising light pollution. Darkness at night is an integral part of Cannock Chase National Landscape, adding to its beauty and sense of remoteness.

Deer Management

The main public and charitable landowners on Cannock Chase National Landscape are working together to co-ordinate the management of the wild deer that live on the Chase.

Fixed Point Photography

A Fixed Point Photography project has been running on Cannock Chase since 2005 to monitor landscape changes over time. Local resident Steve Welch set up the project and is still involved, co-ordinating volunteer photographers who take images twice a year at 56 points in and around the National Landscape.

People and Access

The National Landscape Team is working with its partners to make the National Landscape more inclusive and welcoming, improve access and exploration of the natural world, and encourage positive behaviours.

Species Recovery

The National Landscape Team is collaborating with partner organisations and land owners to support the recovery of 10 Champion Species that call the National Landscape home.

Our work

Our work is wide-ranging and spans across our four integrated strategic aims for Nature, Climate, People and Place.
